Comic for Wednesday, March 18th
A double page to celebrate the start of chapter 2!
Combining the effort to step up the art and the doing a double page was probably not the wisest decision, but that’s why I update from a buffer, so I can make dumb decisions, and still not update late.
It’s not everything I could dream of in art – originally I was planning on spending more panel time on the spell effects, but eh, I’m honestly still not quite settled on how best to render them, and they didn’t look that impressive, so I went for better pacing instead.
Most characters up to this point have referred power used in magic as “mana”; the fact that the power is referred to as “psonic”, “psions”, etc, here doesn’t indicate its a different power, rather, the IDS refers to it differently, being that the majority of their personal come from another world; its been mentioned in comic, but where the IDS are from magic is a relatively recently widespread phenomena; thus the first widespread understanding of magic was already systematic, scientific and understood.
Generally it’s still referred to overarching as “magic” by the IDS… because even as a largely systematically understood concept… it’s still magic. 🙂

Your use of “than” almost always should be “then”.

Google Docs and OpenOffice don’t correct the then/than issue (least not in a the few instances I just checked). That said, I agree that using a word processor is something I should be better about. Frequently I have a script in a word processor, but change it fairly extensively during lettering, and generally only check words I’m not sure about, but sometimes I forget (and the older pages are admittedly a good bit sloppier in general).
Than and Then is probably the most prevalent one because until recently I thought the usage such as here was correct (rather than just making a typo… I’m not longer even confident if that one is right or not :D). I think the best approach from my point of view is try to use it less, which is what I start doing later in the comic (it seems that almost every case where it can simply be removed without changing the meaning of the sentence is where I’ve used it wrong).
In appreciation of the comment though I’ve gone through and fixed a few more pages. I’m also (very slowly) updating the old pages and will definitely keep a better eye out for it
thanthen.It might be easier to remember if you consider the meaning: “then” means “at that time”, or “after that” (shading into “because of that”), while “than” basically means “compared to”. A simple mnemonic is that “then” looks like “when”, which also has to do with time.
Other tricky ones that won’t be picked up by spellcheckers are “it’s” (“it is”) versus “its” (“belonging to it”) and “you’re” (“you are”) versus “your” (“belonging to you”); unlike with nouns, with pronouns the apostrophe marks the lost letters of a contraction, rather than possession/genitive case. If in doubt, try it with “I” instead and see if it should be “I’m” or “my”. 🙂

In most cases I’m aware of the difference if I think about it (besides with than and then, as noted above), but as I read all of those interchangeably for the most part, it’s hard for me to pick up once I’ve typed it wrong.
The other problem is the much of the dialog isn’t written in something with spellcheck…
There are few reasons behind some of the flaws and my horribly proofreading of my own work (considering something akin to proofreading has been my job twice before…) but none of them are good reasons (I don’t think there are good reasons for that sort of thing…)
I really appreciate the effort you’ve gone in giving me a hand cleaning up the messes; before Ian above made that comment, I’m pretty sure every than and then was incorrect, so any grasp of coherent writing this comic has by now is thanks to people that have corrected me 😉
Why do I get the impression that returning fire isn’t a great idea?
