Comic for Monday, September 13th, 2021
Sep14
I did consider making this page just four panels of fog with the caption “sounds of fighting intensify” on each panel…
This is a little condensed, as admittedly I’d sort of planned this comic to by the first half, and decided to shuffle things around. Consequently we don’t see Tyler throwing the car, so I feel I should point that has little to do with his innate power, he’s just fairly good at that sort of telekinetic manipulation of objects as well (though he does have to actually cast it, to throw it).
As for what is going on in the last panel… Well, we’ll see more next page. This will get a bit interesting, I’m afraid.
“I will surely pay you Tuesday for a comic book today!”
Honestly, having one of your comics every other week beats getting almost any other comics twice a week.
That said, I will be looking forward to next week’s installment a lot, but I strongly appreciate your taking care of yourself.
Hey folks; I hate to do this, but I think I’m going to postpone the comic this week. I’ll be back in a week with a comic (I’m fairly certain).
Past,
Take your time for necessary real world stuff. You are safe. The torches and pitchforks were diverted under the guise of hurricane relief.
Writing from Brexitland here – it could be years before we get torches and pitchforks here on the empty store shelves…
Don’t listen to these people, Past. We know where you live, and we’re coming for you.
Just as soon as I can get this dimensional gate to open.
We’re coming for you!
And we are bringing lots of meat to BBQ. And drinks!
And we will stay up all night swapping stories or what he, with the fanciest stick, got up to.
Yours is on the fritz too? Mine just stranded me on Endor for the past week.
“And what is that?”
“I am not left-handed!” [switches the sword to his right hand and starts driving him back]
… man, I gotta watch that thing one of these days …
Just for a few laughs, visit Youtube and search for “Monty Python black knight” or “Monty Python Holy Grail.” The “John Cleese Did Not Enjoy Filming Monty Python and the Holy Grail” interview revealed that George Harrison funded Life of Brian.
There might be a typo in panels 1 and 12.
Affect and effect are annoyingly similar words in meaning, spelling, and sound.
An effect, as you have it, is something that happens, like Tyler’s cold effect. To effect something is to make it happen.
The usage above could be entirely what you mean, but it feels like it would be odd for a family head like Elmon to play the stupid sorts of word games I’m wont to play, even as his death potentially approaches.
To affect, on the other hand, is to act on, produce a change in or an effect on. Tyler’s freezing effect usually affects those around him.
It’s very easy to get these wrong, especially since there are numerous accents that cause them to sound exactly the same, so for some people, the only distinction is when things are in writing.
Seconded.
Today’s page:
Elmon: I admit it, you are better than I am.
Tyler: Then why are you smiling?
Elmon: Because I know something you don’t know.
I think we have to wait two pages (until 9/27), with the second one having the next segment of this conversation.
Monty python redux follows:
Elmon’s feet freeze and fall off.
Elmon says “Such a trivial thing does not effect me. You cannot win.”
Elmon’s legs freeze and fall off.
Elmon says “Such a trivial thing does not effect me. You cannot win.”
Elmon’s penis freezes and falls off.
Elmon says “Such a trivial thing does not effect me. You cannot win.”
Elmon’s hands freeze and fall off.
Elmon says “Such a trivial thing does not effect me. You cannot win.”
Elmon’s arms freeze and fall off.
Elmon says “Such a trivial thing does not effect me. You cannot win.”
Elmon’s body freezes and his head falls off.
Elmon says “Such a trivial thing does not effect me.”
Amy throws Elmon’s head in a bag.
Given Saldur’s reputation for not dying properly when he’s killed, it’s possible that the step after “Amy throws Elmon’s head in a bag.” is something like Elmon finally gets around to showing with deed rather than word that such things are really trivial and don’t affect him.
Or, it’s also possible that Elmon and Past Utopia are actually using the correct words, and what Elmon is *really* saying is, “This thing you’re doing is too small to wake up my abilities and make me into the duelist everyone talks about. If you want to really be able to say you beat me, you need to do something showier, or I can’t do anything more than stand here, talk, and wave this middlingly-firm magic construct at you.
The Monty Python reference was to show Elmon was outmanoeuvred and not implying Amy would actually be throwing Elmon’s head in a bag. It appears that Elmon is stressed. Elmon’s hair in panel 1 and previous comic is neat. In next to last panel, Elmon’s hair is messed up. He may be bluffing while waiting for Families to step in. In the 2nd to last panel, it looks like Tyler has ice around Elmon’s foot. Tyler predicted that Elmon would show up here so he has this planned. The August 29 shows Elmon was not expecting a “welcome committee.” Maybe next comic will show Elmon’s fate.
My comment was to say, we don’t know he really *was* outmaneuvered yet. He *looks* like he was outmaneuvered. But he claims to have an ace in the hole, and it could matter.
It’s my guess it doesn’t matter as much as he thinks it does. But it could drag this out for another few updates if Past opts to go that way. Or maybe he’ll just last to the end of the next update, rather than only to the beginning of it like it looks like could happen right here.
I’m not trying to predict how it’ll go, I just think the game’s still undecided. It’s not like a soccer game with a score of 56-0 at the bottom of the third and all the bases loaded. Did I get that reference right? Sports aren’t really my thing.
I guess I’ll just say, the next update’s going to be amazing.
In such cases, there may be a delicate balance to reach.
Remove or damage enough of him that he cannot continue to fight, while not causing the fatal damage that would allow him to resurrect at his phylactery chamber…
In spite of his brave talk, Elmon is getting frazzled. In the next to last panel, Elmon’s previous neat hair is messed up. While Elmon is being distracted, Tyler is attacking low at floor and foot level.
Couple things I love in this page:
First, in panel 12 (I think) the floating mana particles are placed just right that it looks like a silhouette of Tyler in the mist with sinister glowing eyes.
Second, wonderful character consistency. We’ve seen from previous fights that Tyler isn’t really what I would call a “Chatty Combatant”. He responds when people talk, but he always seems more focused on getting things done than on trading words. It absolutely feels like he’s just humoring Elmon, who just will not shut up, and using his opponent’s desire to talk forever as part of his strategy.
Well, if Tyler really is using tricks he learned from Peter, then you’re probably exactly right about panel 12. After all, actually *being* where he appeared to be wouldn’t be that much like Peter in a fight, or rather a discussion that could turn into a fight.
That said, I feel like Tyler hasn’t learned sufficiently from Peter, or he would’ve let Elmon think this was just a conversation for longer. I mean, maybe the car bit was OK, but pointing out that you managed to affect your opponent before he realized it? That feels unwise.
Oh, I dunno.
Peter is all about layers upon layers. If the foot freeze thing was meant to distract Elmon from his REAL actions, he could be slightly irritated that Elmon isn’t keeping up…
(also as an aside, why do I keep typing “Elron” and having to correct it? :D)
I’d say Peter’s more about contingency plans. He doesn’t care which plan works, so long as one does. As such, while the guy wasn’t aware of either plan, he’d keep both running.
That said, I can easily see how someone studying Peter might think it’s layers and go with a layered plan like you describe.
As far as you typing Elrond every time you try to spell Elrond… I suspect that we all have our own issues with spleling here. 8D.
Skillful. From one cliff hanger to a bigger cliff hanger! I’m getting nose bleed!
that small snowflake that bounced off of Elmon’s Mana-like Sword, hit his (Elmon) car with enough force.. that it caused the car to be thrown to the wall and be damaged.
I think Tyler threw the car at Elmon, actually.
