Comic for Monday, November 30th, 2020
This most important poll of the year should open on Tuesday… Santa Hats are at stake. We’ll see if we get something unusual or the predictable…
[EDIT] Poll is up.
The cars in this world tend to look a specific card in our world frequently, but I wouldn’t put much thought into that. A common way things are drawn these days are to use 3d models as reference – a great deal of comics and things rather extensively use 3d models to reference rooms, objects, and even characters. I almost never do (which is probably obvious) but cars are pretty much the only thing I do (as is also probably equally obvious). The drawing program I tend to use doesn’t have sophisticated support for it, but I have that 3d model for it, so lots of cars are loosely outlined via one particularly brand of cars.
I can’t wait to see Rovak wearing a Santa Hat swinging a bag filled with explosives!
For the first time in a while we are going to have a late comic. I currently donโt have internet consequently have no good way to make comics appear. ETA sometime tomorrow.
Perhaps either late Monday or earlier Tuesday. Complications. Sorry for the delay. I have the comic, but no good way to get it to the site. I should have scheduled it, but didnโt anticipate having no internet suddenly.
As always, we will be happy to welcome it when it arrives, and thankyou for your hard work ๐
Speak for yourself, I’ preparing to sue.
How dare you, good sir!? How dare you force me to wait another day to enjoy this comic!? Expect a suit forthwith.
I’m with Stacts. And if the lawsuit doesn’t pan out, I’m sourcing pitchforks and torches as we speak.
It is amusing that Naomi’s little sister is in the top 5 despite the fact that she’s never been in the comic and we don’t know her name?
The world really isn’t fair. I’m sure some political science nerds would get a kick out of this being a proof of concept of the power of name recognition in votes…
(unless I’m forgetting seeing her?)
In what I’d call the Irony category (people are voting for it because ridiculous) the top contender (“Fluffy”) has never to my knowledge been called that on panel (Peter suggested doing it, but I don’t think he actually did).
I’m sure some people (myself included) are voting for her in order to see what she looks like.
What, September 7th didn’t give you a good enough view?
โฆ nah, I guess I can see the desire for a better view โฆ

Another potential problem is that there were multiple people named Vicksberg
Has Milli Vicksberg ever been called “Vicksberg” in the comic, like it was her common identifier? Have her parents ever been called anything in the comic? I mean, besides one of them being called “your mom” and “your mother”, of course.
Sure, Milli was worried about it happening, but possibly just because her brother’s known to go by the family name as his moniker.
It seems that there is foul scheme afoot in the comments. An anti-Naomi alliance. Why would such a thing even exist?
This has stirred me to make my first comment after reading for years. I think I speak for the common reader when I say we cannot allow the nefarious schemers to win. Their many comments over the years have been a valuable contribution, but this betrayal cannot stand.
I propose a simple counter tactic: Vote Naomi.
Pros:
-Picture of Naomi wearing a Santa Hat.
-You get to vote for a winner.
Cons:
-None.
Brought to by the Naomi for Santa Hat 2020 campaign.
PS: If Naomi wins, can I get the result as my avatar?
Ah, but now there is a counter-scheme in the comments. Truly we have found balance ๐
I tried to help out here, but I think I ended up helping no one, as with 10 votes it would be basically impossible to not vote for Naomi, Ila, and Kally.
I’m already in discussions with AOC. There will be consequences for anyone found to be a supporter or enabler of Naomi!
I see that the Christmas poll is up, and it looks like Naomi is already out to an early lead. If we want to have any chance of unseating her, we need a plan here.
Unify behind an alternative candidate that actually has a chance of winning.
Ila is the perennial runner up, so that’s one option. The Consul perhaps has a chance. Kally and Miko both have a chance and have previously rated highly. We need a plan here though, or Naomi will walk away with the santa crown easily again.
Ferrus, we trust you. Pick our candidate and we’ll get to work!
*insert obligatory joke regarding American voting here*
It seems like our choices have really boiled down to Kally or Ila if we want to pick someone with any real chance of an upset. As Anthony points out, we can take advantage of multiple selection voting:
Ila, Kally, Miko, Fluffy, and the Consul as the candidates with the most chances, as long as we don’t vote Naomi.
I think multiselect voting is actually working against us though, and make me this all but impossible, as I suspect almost everyone would put Naomi in their top ten unless unless deliberately trying to dethrone her. With a single selection we could try to get the Ila Fan Club folks to vote Ila over Naomi, but with multiple selection voting, chances are many of them are just going to vote for both of them.
I suppose there’s an outside chance of Naomi being dethroned by her younger sister… perhaps winning polls in their blood, so I’d add her to voting roster just in case there’s a chance for an upset.
I’ve been saving my vote to see where it would be most usefully deployed, but it looks like I’ll go for: Kally, Miko, Ila, Fluffy, the Consul, Peter (some chance of top 3), and than waste a few on Rovak, Tyler, Ryn, and Arron, just because I like those characters and I don’t think anyone else outside of those first 6 has any real chance.
Consul in the fluffy crown would certainly have an entertaining expression ๐
Perhaps you need ranked choice voting rather than just multiselect. I still might put Naomi at #1, but it’d be a tough choice then
Given that you can vote for ten, just pick several plausible candidates and avoid including Naomi. So just pick all of the above.
I tried voting for Fluffy 10 times, but i think the poll is broken. It wouldn’t let me do it. Don’t you folks know anything about Al Capone style voting!?!
Those two are a TERRIBLE influence on each other.
I look forward to seeing the smoking remains of the consequences ๐
Agreed. They do have great banter though.
“That’s a terrible idea. Tell me more about how we do it.”
The question now, is there really a family mage problem requiring all law enforcement hands on deck? Or did Mium decide he needed to be more aggressive than a “Do Not Interrogate | Interrupt” warning on Kally’s ID?
With sufficient scheming on Peter/Mium’s part, it could be BOTH….
Eh, now that you’ve pointed it out, that DOES seem the most likely scenario, doesn’t it? Is it almost time to revisit the Consul assassination team? Perhaps they’ve found themselves in hot water?
In panel seven-typo?: that “means” family mages
Yes, I agree. I suspect there was a rewrite that wasn’t 100%?
I had to read it several times before I picked up what you were pointing out.
Kally definitely wants to have a race.
“Your ideas are bad. Tell me more.”
I think Naomi’s worldview is rubbing off on Kally. ^^
Three pages back: “…before Kally gets up and gets herself into some sort of trouble….it sounds like the Kally situation is mitigated for the time being”. Of course, that may be a Peter definition of trouble, not a normal person definition.
In Panel 3: I wonder what “miuse” means?
If this seems condescending, it is not, I really have no idea what it means.
typo I assume – Misuse
Fixed, thanks ๐
I guess “miuse” is “misuse”
“miuse” is an ancient Malsan word meaning “to use inappropriately”.
Have you considered investing in a bucket full of Hot-Wheels? That and your phones camera would give you a nice large assortment of body styles to work with.
Mmmmmm. Now I want a bucket of hot wings.
That is actually a brilliant idea: I am totally stealing it for my drawing. AND I already have “a bucket of Hot-Wheels” (a.k.a. I am totally raiding my son’s car collection (they’re not all Hot Wheels: but since I worked hard to get him a good selection of designs (and colours): it’ll make an awesome reference).
I dig the color coded speech bubbles in panel 7.
While it was fairly clear who was talking, as I ended up using an un-tailed balloon I decided it’d be for the best, and there’s some precedent for doing it (I typically use hair or eye color for the bubble color… in some cases those are the same, in this case hair color wouldn’t work very well…)
Which was effective, but possibly the coloring of the speech bubbles in panel five should be different to avoid confusing that with the panel 7 bubbles?
Panel 5 and 7 speech bubbles ARE different colors on my screen.
I know we’ve seen this system at past before, but it makes following the conversation so much easier it just makes me happy.
I’ve read books, like Steven King novel type books, where I wished they’d color coded some of the conversations.
I’m not arguing for them all to be color coded. Whatever amount of time spent doing that would be squandered for most panels. Even if it was a small amount of time, it could be better used elsewhere in most cases. But here? I’ll take my guilty pleasure in being inordinately happy about it. Thank you!
