Wtf a comic on Tuesday?!
I decided I’ll do 5 comics this week instead of 3. Enjoy!
Hopefully Mium’s dialog isn’t hard to read. I faded the echo out pretty far since I didn’t have enough room to offset it like I did in the last page.
This page is the first minor continuity snarl that came from some plot-thread weaving. The reader was supposed to meet Naomi’s little sister by now, but unfortunately that got shuffled to later. Since we haven’t met her yet, that’s all I’m saying!
I can’t quite grasp this explanation of how Ila is “only self-aware by inference,” especially since Peter is comparing Ila’s awareness to a human’s. Granted, sentience is something that is impossible (at least with our technology) to prove, but which can be inferred. I thought an entity either had self-awareness or not. I don’t see how an entity that can only infer it’s own self-awareness (rather than one that can understand all the complexities of it’s thought processes) makes it less legitimate.
Self-awareness, in popular usage, is described as, “the capacity for introspection and the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. Wikipedia also says that, “While consciousness is a term given to being aware of oneโs environment and body and lifestyle, self-awareness is the recognition of that awareness.”
On the next page Peter says that she does not seem to be a true AI. I seem to recall reading on some other page that Ila’s mind is given artificial thoughts, which she can’t distinguish from her own. Hmm… Perhaps you meant to say that Ila was given a false sense of awareness? She was basically operated like a remote-controlled puppet, being told what to think… correct?
I think it’s important to note here who is saying it. To Mium a human’s self-awareness likely seems limited, because while humans are aware what that they think, they are frequently unaware why they think a specific thing at any given time – there is huge subconsciousness influence on the consciousnesses.
What Mium is noting is that Ila is more like a human then him in how she gets the end result of her thoughts; exactly what this means is up for some debate as we haven’t seen much of her backstory, but it also would make the fact that she can use magic less surprising (as all humans can to some extent in the comic).
As far as the nature of Ila’s link to Avon’s computers, more then that it exists would be spoilers at this page of the comic ๐
I don’t see how hearing about Naomi’s little sister is a continuity problem to us, since there are a lot of things we don’t know about her. Perhaps if she had said “…like I do.” instead of “…too.” it wouldn’t have even been noticeable.
I like how Mium doesn’t realize that he’s not on the same page as Naomi. ^^
I just think it would have made more sense first, but I think the overall pacing would have suffered at little. We will still see her later so I won’t say more!
I had fun with that the Mium panel ๐
