Comic for Thursday, September 29th
Sorry this is a little late. Had some computer trouble yesterday, and unfortunately have my plate for a little right now so adding another ball to juggling circle means things got a little behind. My computer has decided to adopt an isolationist policy and stop talking to the internet (fix in progress for it still…).
It is intentional that Arron switches languages here and Peter did not. Frequently IDS people speak the local language even amongย themselves (habit and practice I guess?).
I think Peter is likely a walking security clearance violation at the best of times, but I suspect this time has less to do with being careless…
I think that’s the second time Nathan has been mention in the comic. Tom and Nathan were the main characters of a story I wroteย up before I madeย this one (and is where much of the setting of this one comes from). While the timeline has shuffled a bit since than, they are still present in the background of this one, so I can’t really say more than that without various spoilers.
New vote incentive, btw. That’s #1 and #2 from the character poll, and all we are probably going to get because October is on us!
Please submit your ideas for costume based incentives! Either email me, comment here, or comment on the contact page. General rules are any characters from the comic, and with either generic customes, or outfits from various related media. If it’s obscure include a reference link. If there are a ton of suggestions I’ll do votes, otherwise I’ll just pick randomly.
Bored of always seeing the characters wearing the same thing? Think Tyler would make a fine Jedi (from last year, don’t judge my shoddy(er) art!)
- Last year:
- Peter as a king? This may have been him dreaming…
- Kally as a fairy princess… yeah… she was mad about this one…
- There others, but I can’t find them a the moment.
Let’s do more, better, and … [third good thing here] this year!
Typo alerts:
Panel 5
“personale” => “personnel”
“clearence” => “clearance”
Panel 7
“temperatment” => “temperament”
I suppose it becomes a question of is he trying to get the analysts to dig on those topics, bug his uncle by bringing up stuff he should not know, or some combination. I hope he elaborates more on those though, as we the readers are as in the dark as the analysts on half of them.
Costume Ideas: Naomi as Supergirl, Kally as Raven. Been a long time since I read any superhero comics, but they do have iconic costumes. Tyler as Sherlock (the detective) maybe?
I am leery of trying to figure out the motives of any of our author’s characters, Peter most of all. However I am currently entertaining the notion Peter is worried about Arron. Central seems to be willing to eat their own now with them grabbing Kalli. I suspect Peter and Arron are very much alike and they know it. Peter has Naomi but Arron has Dorita and Chip making me think Peter is going to try and talk Arron into getting a bodyguard. Which I suspect might be part of Peter’s interest in knowing where Nathan is.
I suspect most of this is wrong but I love this story because we get complex characters whose motivations we can dissect at length.
Hell, like I know what ticks through Peter’s mind. He’s an enigmatic little bastard, he is.
I’m just the guy that writes and draws this stuff. The characters get up the antics… Your guess is as good as mine… ๐
Huh. I just realized that Peter didn’t actually reveal anything there.
“It doesn’t have” is the key phrase there. He listed off the lack of information, not what they actually have. He basically admitted to looking through their archives, but he can’t be accused of actually revealing anything. By that same point, he also sent a message of what things Naomi would find interesting, if Arron is listening. The only thing he came close to is Project Reclaim, which I assume talks about the Bridgepoint data, but I’m less certain there.
I think Arron is starting to wish the IDS had stuck to file cabinets, as that’s probably the only way they are going to keep Peter out. It’s unlikely he even needs to be that creative… Peter probably made half their security setup.
Something I am curious about is whether or not the I.D.S. office is in an embassy or just leased space. An Embassy is usually treated as territory of the country/world it belongs to so Peter having Masla citizenship wouldn’t help if he was in Central territory. I am doubtful a government would openly have an office with a lot of top secret stuff in foreign jurisdiction although spy agencies have covert ones of course.
BTW Panel 5 shouldn’t “Authorized Personale” be “Authorized Personal”. Grrr, maybe “Personnel” I hate homonyms. It is personnel according to the web dictionary.
It basically has to be an embassy, but at this point I am fairly certain Peter is not actually there. Naomi would be safe as a) Arron does not have a good reason arrest her, he does not even know who she is, and b) She is Naomi, there is pretty much no way to “catch” her without a whole squad of mages.
I imagine there are some blurry lines on sovereignty when it comes to these interdimensional issues. That said, the IDS does not seem to hold local law in high regard in general…
It appears that the “peter” layer in this drawing has been mixed up with the background layers.
In all the panels, you can see the background through peter’s skin.
Also in panels 1 & 4 peter is blurred (like you do the background).
Love the comic.
<3 the idol struck analysts ^_^
Hmmmm… ๐
I can say there may be ideas/clues in the comments of the last page… I think that’s safe to say… ๐ (not to confirm or deny any speculation or anything…)
I really have to say that’s one of those things I throw in that I never really expected people to notice… but it does seem that I have been caught by a whole host of people ๐
Thanks for the comment, and glad to hear you enjoy the comic!
Peter’s glossing over the fact that the analysis process itself is classified. While he should know better as a former analyst, he likely showed Naomi those processes already. Although that answer wouldn’t placate Aaron…
P.S. Magnolia in a ballgown.
I think his answer is mostly for the benefit of the other analysts. And by benefit I mean to sow seeds of questions. These are people that dig out secrets for a living, and he has just sort of thrown a treasure chest full of secrets wide open.
Placating Arron is probably not something that has ever occurred to Peter. I am not sure placating anyone has ever really occurred to him… ๐

Naomi as Yang from RWBY… Or maybe Nora. Which would she like better?
Nora. You don’t want to wish Yang’s fate on anyone do you?
I saw this, and thought the answer was obvious, but the more I think about it, the less I can decide. Really, they are both a really good fit. Her fighting style is closer to Yang though. I think Yang. Naomi is not as hyperactive and silly as Nora. Ugh! Can’t decide. Nora’s costume is probably better even if Naomi is closer to Yang.
@PastUtopia really cool comic, by the way. Love it but don’t usually comment on things. Just saw a RWBY comment though and couldn’t resist. RWBY + The Far Side of Utopia sounds like pretty much my favorite thing ever.

Hi! Thanks for the comment, and glad to hear you’re enjoying it. Will look up these costumes, if one of you wants to provide a link to relevant outfits you have in mind, that’d be a help ๐ I am passingly familiar with RWBY, but I sort of lost track of it at some point quite some time ago.
*I did moderate your comment somewhat; even if it’s not for my comic, let’s steer a little clear of things that look like major spoilers ๐
Up as a vote incentive! Direct link from posterity (or for people that don’t want to vote).
Decided on Nora over Yang after some research for… reasons. ๐ Spoiler reasons. Likely the same ones referenced above.
Heh, gotta love Naomi’s cute smile for Uncle Arron in Panel 4–almost like she was rubbing it in a little. ^^
I’m fairly sure that Arron is now longing for the good old days when Peter was missing-presumed dead. ๐
That IS a common reaction to seeing Peter…
That said, he’s pretty much a walking deal with the devil. There is so much to gain if you can manage to put with him for a bit, and if anyone has experience in Peter-wrangling, it’d be Arron (though I don’t think he’s got his Peter wrangling gloves prepared…).
he forgot the dragon hide ones in his other pants
I am not sure why but I somehow formed the disturbing mental image of Rovak as Elvis in all his sequinned jump suit glory. Hail to the king, baby! Ila as Grumpy Cat.
Once again you provide supremely eclectic selections… ๐
Well, Elvis is a little before my time, and I am not 100% clear on what a cat costume would be, but I gave it a shot, it’s the current vote incentive here ๐
For future posterity, direct link to here ๐
Peter I don’t think you need to lay it on that thick. A simple pointing out that you already know everything and could share it with her at any time, without tipping off the IDS would have sufficed.
Your Uncle is having a very bad week. Make it a little easier on him.
I somehow think Peter was sort of looking for an excuse to slip most of that in… ๐
Peter is not known for making other people’s weeks less bad. It is sort of the opposite, in fact. I imagine Arron has so many wrinkles for a reason, after all ๐
