Comic for Thursday, August 31st
She was distracted by the fancy stick.
Speaking of distracted, I’ve been a little distracted I’ve been a bit distracted this last week, but should be getting back to things here. I hope to finish the character page update next week.
I got promoted at work, which really just means more work, at least in the short term. Also a new XCOM 2 expansion came out… not very good timing on that. All together, well, distracted from important things, like comics.
I’ve started the character page work, but I need to determine what direction to go with the Bio’s (ie, if they are going to contain information not from the comic or not). For the pictures this time I’m just snipping them from the comic, so that will save some time, but will run into trouble for characters we haven’t seen for awhile…
Panel 1: Shouldn’t it be “give me”?. I’m not a native myself
Panel 7. “a drone than a robot”
Panel 11: “that’s the case”
Thanks for the comic
Fixed, thanks 🙂 Well, I left the first one, as I think that’s fine, and if it’s not, I’ll blame Naomi for it. It’s like “you can do it!” an encouragement to try hard. 🙂
Naomi VS Ground: FIGHT!
(I’m still betting on Naomi.)
Um, PastUtopia, does this promotion come with a raise, or just a fancier job title? ^^
It came with a raise, but probably not worth the trouble. Drawing Comics > Work.
Characters that have fallen off buildings:
-Mium (okay, maybe he jumped).
-Maia (she was caught by Magnolia off screen I believe, also jumped).
-Rovak (punched by Ila’s green hand).
-Naomi
This seems to be a pretty common thing. I think she’ll be okay. I guess technically speaking she jumped out of Arron’s office, which was on the sixth story. And she did that on purpose. So yeah, this is probably just a normal Thursday for Naomi.
There could be times when this lady needs her punch to be fatal, not just knock someone into next week. I’m reminded of some special spiked gloves Arnold wore in his first “Conan the Barbarian” movie, when he was a slave training as a fighter. Conjuring such gloves as ethereal things, multiple times, could make them quite “substantial” (magically speaking) and effective.
Here is an image showing one of those “gloves” reasonably clearly:

And as far as falling is concerned, I expect her to punch the ground!
The magic here works on high level equations which Naomi (by her own admission) isn’t good at. She’s what the Lore page calls an “innate mage”, which means that the things she does–super speed, super strength, damage resistance–she can do without thinking about how it’s done. Making something, however–not so much….
And if someone else designed the equations for said gloves, and she simply memorized them?
She probably can’t execute the calculation on her own (though maybe she could if she actually studied and tried – she is not as book-dumb as she acts), but she could certainly use an autocaster that could do something like that.
Like she could get a pair of bracer autocasters that could probably ethereal construct spiked gloves. I am not sure we have seen an autocaster that can make ethereal objects yet, but Ila can so it is probably possible.
If she can hit hard enough to break a red ethereal construct, then she’d probably also break her ethereal construct gloves when she hit something with them. She’d be better off with mundane leather-and-steel gloves, except that people would probably complain about her walking around with 10 inch steel spikes on her knuckles, and her current uniform offers no place to conceal them. ^^
How about autocaster bracers that provide the illusion of hiding real leather and metal spiked gloves? Or just a set of brass knuckles on a chain around her neck. How do you feel about drawing Naomi some jewelry!
Wouldn’t “breaking a red ethereal construct” depend on how complex its equations are? The more complex, the easier to break? So, if spiked gloves are representable by low-complexity equations, they ought to be very tough.
Nope. The more complex, the tougher. Each level of complexity adds “realness” to the construct. Weaker mages make less complex–and thus more vulnerable–constructs.
For any other type of construct, the more complex, the more ways it can go wrong, or at least exhibit an exploitable flaw. Meanwhile, something simple could, per what you say, be toughened-up by variations on the same equation, kind of like this: y=2x; y=4(x/2); y=6(x/3); …
Not by Naomi. She wouldn’t even be interested in trying. 🙂
Check out Panel 5 on THIS PAGE for a hint as to how it works. The calculations seem to be extremely complex even for simple forms, and you have to get them right the first time 🙂
The more complex the calculation, the harder it is to make work originally, but as @Delta-v notes, it seems that once they exist they are harder to make fail.
This makes a certain amount of sense in the magic system, because what reality really does not like is change it seems. If you introduce something that violates physics, you have to put in a lot of power to make it work, but the more “stable” the system is once complete, the more reality in turns defends its existence from something wiping it back out.
I do not think it is purely more complex equals more stable, but in this case the more detailed the simulation of the ethereal construct is, the more reality wants it to keep existing I think.
Or (or possible and) it is just that the red constructs have enough code/data they are capable of rewriting themselves, while a simpler piece of Eidos data does not.
Are we forgetting that Naomi doesn’t use weapons? We’ve never seen her wield one: even though the simplest of weapons (like a baseball bat) in her hands would be devastating. Or even simpler: a ring: imagine if she were wearing a molybdenum ring with a diamond set into it… anything punched with that would stay punched.
I take it Naomi views picking up a weapon as unsporting on her part (or something similar). She would probably take the same view on casting spells (or view it as too fiddly when she could simply just punch it harder).
AND if you punch something hard enough, it IS fatal. Think blunt force trauma fatal.
She’s been shown to at least use rebar as a club when she needs it. And she can reinforced it too so it could take the stress (at the very least). So yeah maybe a set of sharp pointy finger-wear, and a collapsible stick would be a good idea to carry. Then again… Getting her to carry them would still be an issue, as they would make fights less fun.
PastUtopia, congrats on your promotion.
Thanks. 🙂
Is Mium about to have Naomi happen to catch Peter as he jumps out the window? Was that all planned to that degree?
Maybe… but that probably would not work. Just catching someone falling would not save them if they were a normal person like Peter. Naomi can almost certainly survive that, but she cannot fly (that we have seen), so then Peter would still probably break. He would need a way to slow down a lot. Maybe Mium’s trick where he just ripped a gash in the building to stop himself, not sure that would work for Naomi though (she probably does not weigh enough).
Yeah, I figured that wouldn’t be the whole plan, just a part of it. Perhaps Naomi could “reinforce” Peter in the same way she did her tennis racket, or something… or Mium, having jumped already, will catch both of them.
