Comic for Monday, September 12th, 2022
Sorry for the long absence. May be another one in November, but until then I think we should have updates. Maybe I will finally do the Q&A during that one.
Peter mentions Rupture – it’s a type of magic that has come up a few times as it’s popular, it’s the little red lines that makes things explode – you’ve seen Ila use it a few times when she isn’t using one of the other ways to destroy things. It similarly gets messy when used on humans, but leaves them in smaller pieces usually. Peter guesses it’s a demon because it’s more ripped up than anyone would bother to do using an ethereal construct on their own (like Ashvalt chopped someone in half, but only used one cut to do it), while when Atter attacked Mium it tried to rip him to pieces.
Page is coming, but won’t be till tomorrow. Been a little busy had some drawing setbacks getting the page done.
No worries. I’m not busy, so I’ll just camp. Thanks!
Good catch! Bluetooth or the equivalent. Peter carries a cell phone because it’s how he talks to Mium. In the scenes with Atter attacking Peters apartment, Peter sets off an explosion which Mium reminds Peter will disrupt the room communication and he’ll have to use the phone whitch is
already connected with Mium.
What I suspect is that Peter recognizes the voice calling for help.
Thsnks for pointing that out. It’s the small things we all miss.
Peter and Kaly are exactly the duo you do not want to have as enemies. Both might not be all there on the social side, but the complement each other well.
Which is likely why Peter gets along so well with Naiomi. Though she she Kally are certainly different people, they both act as the heavy hitter to Peter’s stealth.
“Will you people keep it down in there? I’m trying to think.”
“Screaming” is a character now?
(also think at least one panel should be [screaming intensifies])
Past sometimes includes jokes there. When Naomi’s little sister was in panel but didn’t have a name, he put something like “you didn’t think I was going to reveal their name in a character tag did you?” or something like that in the character tag.
Always got to check for mouse over text too, though that’s even more rare.
Screaming is absolutely a character. You’ll see. It’s not actually a human that’s calling out, it’s just Screaming personified. It’s a little weird, but nothing to worry about. Screaming won’t hurt you much, just your ears and your voice.
better get Fluffy ready, I got a feeling we’re gonna need him.
Yes. Kally doesn’t think the monster is Atter since Fluffy pretty much burned him to nothingness. A few possibilities come to mind. Heaven forbid that Atter touched someone else with a “demon seed” like he did to Arron. Perhaps Sophie(?) summoned another demon?
Fluffy is like nuking something from orbit, but you get to pick the size of the explosion.
If Arron was possessed with demon seed, then it is a slow process. I’m not sure what the drive would be like, but possibly there are many such plants floating about by now?
Arron did cut his arm off after being alerted by Mium. What if the “tag” placed on Arron’s arm by Atter could be triggered to do something other than surveilance. After all, Mium did suggest losing the arm. That brought to mind that others may also have been tagged. A worker at the building Kally and Peter are visiting may have been “activated”. Anxiously awaiting the next update to see what the archivist reveals next.
Let’s ignore people being killed – Oh no, someone shouted for help, now we have to help.
I wonder whether that is Peter’s usual ethos / modus operandi or whether he realizes that it is his duty as the head of the MSB (at least I suspect it is)?
I’d bank money on it being a rule derived from Peter’s trouble understand people and the need to properly train and prime Mium. People in obvious distress? That’s always happening somewhere. People in obvious distress who also happen to explicitly request help? Always attempt to render aide.
That’s a guess on my part, but it would fit the current scene. It would also, I think, fit the scene where Naomi was demanding action for her friends engaged in deflecting the invasion.
It also fits a certain amount with Peter being a cop. Forgetting all the trouble cops get into because of being cogs in a racist machine, one of the more dangerous things a cop can do is try to help out in a situation where nobody’s asking for help.
– It could turn out it’s a movie set (though they can also be calling for help in that case, too. The real key there is to look for movie cameras.)
– It could turn out it’s a cult and the victim you’re trying to help is into that.
– It could turn out it’s a cult and the victim you’re trying to help is just as murderous as the people trying to sacrifice them to whatever deity they worship.
– It could turn out to be simple domestic violence, and last I knew that actually was the most deadly situation cops run into that’s not due to the whole systemic racism bit.
– It could turn out the victim’s a litigious SOB who wants to sue everybody they can name. Their persecutors already knew this so were wearing masks to protect their identities. The cop’s wearing a badge with their name on it and possibly a uniform with their name on it.
Someone asking for help changes that equation a little. It doesn’t rule out the last couple of cases, though if you’re dealing with the last case, that they asked for help really hurts the seemingly nonexistent case they had an amazing amount. To be clear, I’ve seen some excerpts from court cases like that where somebody saved someone who was being lynched, only to be sued by the person who they rescued. They seemed like stuff that should’ve just been tossed out, but that didn’t always happen if the victim wasn’t asking for help. If I’m recalling correctly, in the only case I read where the victim asking for help wasn’t enough to get it thrown out, the victim was white, the judge was white, the jury was all white, the victim’s savior was black, and it was a notably racist part of the country.
Except in the scenarios you describe, the cop is usually looking for an opening to help. Peter seems reluctant.
That depends on the cop and the situation. Different cops are different. It’s almost like they’re people.
Almost. Sadly these days that perception varies greatly by locale.
I’ve known a couple cops that seemed like pod people. I mean, before they were cops, they were cool and all. They said when they went to the academy that they were taking that job because the people needed a cop who was on their side. But they were very much not what I’d call on their community’s side after. 🙁
Reminds me of when Miko decided to save Tamara. I get the feeling that Peter logically feels like it’s not worth getting involved, but hearing people call for help decided he cannot just ignore it.
Could be that it doesn’t sound like a soldier or corporate thug as well. Peter was planning on blowing this building up. It’s pretty clear that he doesn’t really like whoever is in it, but there turned out to be people he didn’t expect there.
I’m gonna guess it’s because “rescue screaming civvies while trying to stealth” has now progressed to “rescue victims of illegal experiments *from a threat we recognize*”, and whatever’s causing the screaming is gonna cause bigger problems later than getting caught skulking around.
Fascinating. Thank you. They are communicating via a radio link of some sort?
It could just be a cellphone. Kally has had one in her possession previously. We know Peter carries his always. Even Kally didn’t have a cellphone its reasonable that the security office would have some way of communicating out otherwise they would do poorly at reporting problems they see on security cameras.
Both of them wear an earpiece in their right ear.
Much appreciated. I had missed that detail. Thank you.
