Comic for Monday, April 24th
Apr25
Well. Barely monday, but still monday. By my reckoning.
This page was a good example of “haste makes waste”. Was trying to draw it quickly, but realized about halfway through that it was Naomi’s right arm in the sling. Like… the other right arm. The one on the right side of body. If you draw things quickly there is tendency to draw people a characters right hand on your right side, like a mirror. This is why a lot of characters end up unintentionally left handed (it’s not just me!) Anyway… fixed that mostly I think.
I think I’d planned to ramble here more, but I should probably go to sleep instead. That seems like a good idea.
G’night.
“I slept a bunch, so it’s probably fine by now” is most RPG quote I’ve seen in something that wasn’t explicitly an RPG parody.
I’m not convinced Naomi is aware she is not in an RPG (parody or otherwise).
In fact, now that I think about, Naomi is playing an RPG, Peter is playing a RTS, Rovak is playing Duck Hunt, and everyone else is just trying to figure out why they are so crazy.
Rovak’s playing Duck Hunt is he? Now I’m wondering who plays the dog that laughs at him whenever he misses a shot?
Hmm, who else… I suppose Mium is playing… the Sims, I guess? And for Miko… I dunno, whatever, but with cheats enabled.
I’d say Peter would rather be playing Turn Based Strategy. What with all the complaining about people acting too fast.
Man, normal is boring. I wanna be there, have nonsense like that be “normal”. Our normal is the “blah blah blah”, hers is “Yeah I was shot the other day, but it’s fine now. Even a doctor said so, or something like that anyway.”
So not fair. *pout*
Look on the bright side. We could be stuck in the normal boring world without The Far Side of Utopia to read to relieve us of that fact temporarily twice (three?) times a week.
@PastUtopia, The Far Side of Utopia RPG when??
Unlikely :P. If I ever worked on a game again, I don’t think an RPG would be viable, even like an RPG maker one would be a lot of work for dubious return.
I am not sure that pastutopia would make a good RPG.
Like Hogwarts makes a very poor RPG. (It doesn’t have a proper magic system, and there really isn’t any excitement in there except for it being different then “normal” and only for the “plot characters”)
PastUtopia has a great magic system, however, it has a very poor balancing system.
It also has very little to do except for the people wrapped up in the plot. And the slow unveiling of the plot is one of the most serious hooks in this comic.
If I did make an MMORPG, I will definitely be influenced in my magic creation by what I have read and seen here.
I was mostly just joking. PastUtopia used to work the video game industry (he talks about it in various early commentaries).
While I do not play that many games anymore, world setting was almost the most important part to me. I have no idea how the mechanics of a The Far Side of Utopia game would work, but I would sure rather give it a shot than Generic Fantasy Clone 14 or Bad Science SciFi Sequel 5.
That’s the Naomi I know and love. ^^
Sometimes I wonder what percentage of Naomi’s abilities are a result of deliberate genetic manipulation (designer child), and what percentage were a complete surprise to the geneticist (“She can do WHAT?“).
I also wonder just what she was “designed” to be. 🙂
There is a brief mention way back HERE, but it just says that the M.U.E. program is not Naomi’s specialty (the program that Naomi and presumably Lisa are in).
Interesting to see how this scene compares to that one.
It sounds like they are not designed for “jobs” as Lisa dismisses that as being “artificial intelligence”, but Naomi almost has to be designed to for athletics. We really have not seen anyone else in her weight class in terms of athletics. Kally might have been holding her own in airball, but it was pretty much a pure magic vs. brawn game.
It seems that there is an underlying goal to generate innate mages from genetics (extrapolating from the Aristocracy Families), so Naomi might have been an attempt to fish for a rare innate talent, and might actually have hit gold, because she seems like more than just a typically booster (like just after she got shot and when she broke Kally’s barrier).
Leaving art aside, I notice looking at the old page it is less than half the size of the current page, has half as many panels, and less than half as many words. Comparatively speaking, one new page is at least two of the old pages in content. Just noticed that and thought I’d share. Keep up the good work!
you know that would make an interesting side story. also how are designer children created and raised? the aristos i could see making their children and raising them. but normal ppl wouldn’t have access to some of the more… esoteric options. and for some reason i don’t see naomi’s parents as much more than maybe middle class. nor do i see her coming out of avon or a competitor’s lab. while it is possible she either has some rouge element going on or special complex someone slipped in. how? and importantly WHY?
and related, how much of their parents dna is needed to define parintage? i dont really see them as “true” test tube babies. i mean all of their dna just built with some sort of amino acid sludge arranged into whatever pleasing shape they think it should be, poped into an oven, and ding your new baby.
i would assume, and most especally for aristos, atleast some of the parents dna is there to show what families they came from.
I really like this page. For two reasons: the comment about Naomi being smart, and then Naomi proving it by asking “do the jobs involve … hitting things?” That is honestly how I feel most of the time lol
Career priorities. Just got to figure out what you actually want to do first, that’s the hard part for most people.
It must be fun being Naomi.
Pretty sure Naomi agrees. Why she is usually smiling.
