Comic for Wednesday, February 17th
I’ve never been fond of showing two characters thought bubbles on the same page, I do it occasionally but generally try not to. This is the reason we don’t see Naomi’s 6th panel thought bubble to avoid see-sawing between them, but I imagine it’s something like “yay smash ball fun fun” π
I continue to screw around with how I draw the magic effects. I warned you we’d probably never get to a point where I was happy with them. In some ways I miss the blue ring element I’ve been using so long but it doesn’t really mesh with the newer effects. There is still further consideration.
And no, I didn’t get a reference image for ‘hazed out’ perspective by looking at a bright light for a few seconds. That would be stupid. Of course I wouldn’t do that. π
Someone recently emailed me with an interesting theory about the magic effects weren’t ‘real’ and just perceptions, and how that’s why they cast no lighting effects on objects and people. I was very appreciative of the distance they went to cover for the fact that I can’t draw very well. π
Friday will have a comic, but bear with me if it goes up a little late. I’d expect Friday afternoon, but you never know, things may go well.
I hope the green thought bubble is fairly obvious; when associating colors to characters that are less… chromatically thematic?… then Naomi I had to consider more, but I figured Kally would be either Red or Green, but that Green would be more obvious here (since she’s not wearing the red shirt that we’ve seen her wear previously or in most of her artwork), and or seeing her Ethereal Object Magic – in fact the barrier she made was blue, like all the others we’ve seen. I debated that, but when I flipped way way back the last time she’d down that it was also blue, so stuck with it this time.
I’ll leave why she doesn’t have her trump card(s) or what it would be to your Β speculation, but gonna go with it has something to do with the rules of the game no matter how loosely you are reading ’em π
Sorry for the comment a couple years late, but… I swear, I have seen that magic circle elsewhere before. Not just tFSoU. Unfortunately, I have no clue where it comes from and am dying to learn. Please help.
Also, just rererereading the archives, and realizing how much I missed by not looking at the comment section the first four times.

They are a modified brush pack for Photoshop you can buy, based on various alchemical occult concepts. I think I bought them from here.
I assume other people have bought and use the same circles, but I wouldn’t know who, sorry there. Maybe other commenters who read lots of webcomics might know π
I use a few other their other brushes, though not as much as I should. Being a sort of untrained artist, I never really realized early on how much digital brushes mattered for material effects and patterns and stuff… still don’t use them enough.
The circles themselves are pretty loose with how they use the alchemy symbols involved (and a lot of them are nonsense glyphs) but I just sort of adapt that to be what I want, since my use of alchemical symbols was always a loosely adapted shorthand that I thought looked…magic-y.
The whole magic circle thing was added when I turned it into a comic to make things more fancy looking, and don’t really have any regret there, but it does mean it doesn’t tie into the actual magic system as well as I would like, being more of a visual effect than a real diagram of what is happening.
Anyway, glad to hear you enjoy, and thanks for reading! π
where’s the update?
Probably go this afternoon/evening, maybe early tomorrow. Friday’s updates are still tenuous territory at the moment.
And there we go, update is up π
To be honest even if Naomi loses, I am thinking somehow she can still surprise and unsettle Kally before the end… Just a feeling.
I think she’s already surprised her at least a little. I don’t think Kally really planned on losing any points… π
I agree with @Jindra34. Kally’s trump cards are probably along the lines of close range melee attacks, and thus, forbidden here.
I really like the way you drew Mione’s eyes watering after Kally’s blinding attack. It’s little touches like that that make good art, great. π
Do you suppose Kally will apologize to the spectators, too? ^^
Well, I think it’s pretty safe to say that anything she did during the ‘dismember mech-tanks’ segment is probably off limits… π To be fair though, the same holds true for Naomi to at least an extent – punching things really is her calling even if it’s not necessarily her only skill…
I don’t reckon Kally spends large amounts of her time apologizing… π While she is at least a good step more professional then Peter, it doesn’t really appear that being polite was really included in the IDS Handbook… π Probably an oversight.
Kally probably lacks what she would call her trump cards because her training is as a combat mage, and most of the stuff she is really good at would cross the Attacking line.
Though I’m wondering what else Kally did with that flash burst, given that she considers the match already over.
I’m suspecting you’ve got the nail on the head there… π
We’ll see – she’s been seen to be highly confident all the way through the match, even if she was a little taken off-guard here and there; maybe some of the trump cards are still tucked in the sleeve, if not the hand…? π
