Glad to hear that you are just busy and not ill or injured. The pitchfork and torch factories shut down due to Wuhan 2019 virus and haven’t re-opened so you should be safe! –** grin **–
There will be a comic this week, but it’s running late. Last week I was busy. This week I am busy and sick. This is why things shouldn’t be put off. Still I think I’ll update this week, it’ll just be either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Update: I lied, unfortunately. Going to miss this week as well. Just running too far behind on things, and there’s things I need to get done by the end of the month.
I’ll will attempt to update on time on Monday 9/4.
Basically every other Monday. Except the one for July 31 was late, and Past implied that it would be delivered on August 7, but with the August 14 update still happening. He said something about getting two in a row.
August 7 happened, but I haven’t seen August 14th’s yet. It’s possible that I misunderstood the timing.
No, no, its every week.
Except every OTHER week it doesn’t turn up and we start with the torches and pitchforks.
The demand for torches and pitchforks would tank if it were OFFICIALLY every other week, and that would run the economy…..
Me also. I’m not *too* worried. The gates are down to Palindra right now which could explain the delay. I’m not sure what’s up with that, but it’s probably not related to Past. I mean, it’s a huge world and he’s just one person on it. I’m sure there’s all sorts of reasons the gates could be down.
We’ll just have to wait until they’re back and I’m confident we’ll get a new comic then, or at least an author update.
If the “spirit world” is how Magnolia see the world (when she opens her eyes), Naomi’s comment about “seeing occasional stray thoughts” might explain Magnolia’s ability to read minds.
While Magnolia insists she cannot read people’s minds, it seems equally clear that she can at least pick up their surface thoughts, which sounds a like what Naomi is describing (likely magnified quite a bit as Magnolia seems far more sensitive).
Considering how frequently she responds to them, I’m going to guess they appear to her very similar to normal speech, as otherwise I think she’d learn to stop replying to them.
It’s possible that some seem more like speech than others, and she just responds to the ones that feel more like speech. It just happens those include a lot of the accusations of mind reading.
To be clear, I know speech ‘sounds’ and visual stuff usually ‘appears’. But do we know if her ears actually work? Alternatively, maybe she’s hearing magic rather than seeing it, or it could be some other sense altogether. I’m using ‘appears’ to make it clear it’s not the auditory sense as I know it, because even if she’s “hearing” magic, what she’s hearing must clearly be very different than what I hear. I’m only talking about me in that prior sentence because I generally don’t experience life as you, so who am I to say your experience is different than hers?
I lowkey love Naomi, sometimes it’s easy to forget her indifference doesnt mean she is an idiot. Just that she doesn’t care to utilize the information like other people would. Her physical capabilites let ger by pass the need for convoluted solutions.
Naomi can “see” with some type of magical ability. This is the first time I can remember reading something other than physical strength or durability from Naomi’s mana abilities.
I view it more as a physical enhancement on her eyes, just like she does to the rest of her body but to a lesser degree. It’s mainly so she can detect stealth units and snipers in low visibility environments. Nothing worse than getting shot.
She also “saw” through nathan’s use of elipsis by seeing a void in magic in the shape of a person. I think it was nathan, it was the guy who carries around a crowbar everywhere.
It Tom’s interference field she saw. Tom has the crowbar, Nathan has the fanciest stick.
But I’m not sure seeing data manipulation is that rare an ability. Jayce also “saw” Naomi altering her form, mana seems easy to detect (I think IDS tech “saw” ILA “dumping a lot of psions”), and I have a vague feeling there have been other examples. Probably not very common. Not something Weber can do, it seems.
Basic analysis of magical effects doesn’t seem particularly rare; offhand I found examples of Mione, Rovak Stas, Camilla, and Kally doing it, and there’s probably more (and Naomi mentioned that she wished she could show Nathan’s staff to Mione).
Also that old green-haired who came in with Elmon. Sarraine maybe? And I think Ashvalt, Nathan, Tom, and Mium. There’s probably a lot more instances of it that we’re not thinking about, because they tend to be pretty casual about it.
On the one hand, seeing the staff was special was kind of a gimme, since it is apparently a solid staff, but she saw him summon it. He tends to do that in fights like it’s not a secret that his staff can pop in and out of existence.
That might be because he doesn’t see the value in disguising that, it could be that it’s not as easily disguised as I think (maybe *most* people could tell his staff is “too solid”), or it could be that there may be less that could be done regarding his staff than I think.
That last possibility could go on either side or both. Maybe it can only be invoked or sent away when another person is able to see it. Maybe even a magic suppression field or whatever couldn’t prevent him from summoning it or sending it away. Maybe he owns it at such a fundamental level that even if he’s physically separated from it, he still retains full control, or maybe it automagically pops out of Hyle again if someone tries to remove it too far from his vicinity.
There are a lot of people who work in architectural fields who aren’t actually architects.
That said, I think Naomi’s style of remodeling probably lacks a certain something that I tend to expect from remodelers. It probably still qualifies for the word, but…
Update: Next page should be on Monday 9/4. Sorry for the delays.
I realize I’m slacking here and it’s not my intention to go to a once every three week schedule here, but I’m going to miss another week.
Sorry about that; just been busy at the moment, and not finding time to catch up on this. Next month should probably be less hectic.
Glad to hear that you are just busy and not ill or injured. The pitchfork and torch factories shut down due to Wuhan 2019 virus and haven’t re-opened so you should be safe! –** grin **–
I’m excited for Monday’s comic!

No no no no! I *need* a comic! Have mercy! Just a little fix! Er, comic, just a little comic…. I think I’ve said too much…..
Past,
Get well. Get caught up.
Maybe I missed a notice but are the comics on an every two weeks schedule now???
Thx.

That’s what I thought. I hope Past is okay.

Magnolia is quite insistent that she can’t read minds. In fact, the more you think that, the more she insists….
I suppose she’s not reading minds, she’s reading stray thoughts leaking out.
It just looks like mindreading to everybody else. (Especially when she insists otherwise while you’re thinking it.)
Considering how frequently she responds to them, I’m going to guess they appear to her very similar to normal speech, as otherwise I think she’d learn to stop replying to them.

Naomi is my absolute favorite character in this whole comic. Can’t get enough of her bluntness and straight forward worldview.
Naomi can “see” with some type of magical ability. This is the first time I can remember reading something other than physical strength or durability from Naomi’s mana abilities.

It has been alluded to before I think. She could “see” Nathan’s staff was special back when they briefly fought.
I feel like her enhanced sight has been referred to elsewhere, but that is all I can remember at the moment.
She also “saw” through nathan’s use of elipsis by seeing a void in magic in the shape of a person. I think it was nathan, it was the guy who carries around a crowbar everywhere.

Panel 5: people are lurking voids -> lurking in voids
Unless some people ARE lurking voids, which would be disturbing but explain some things….
I will neither confirm nor deny this possibility.
I’m betting her windows have a very poor R-value.
They are, however, exceptionally clear.
“I’m sort of an expert in that architectural field.”
Love it!
It would be better to say she is an expert Remodeler. Architects don’t add windows to existing structures.
There are a lot of people who work in architectural fields who aren’t actually architects.
That said, I think Naomi’s style of remodeling probably lacks a certain something that I tend to expect from remodelers. It probably still qualifies for the word, but…
